How to Use This Morse Code Translator
TypeMorse converts between English text and International Morse code in real time — no button press required. As you type, every letter, number, and punctuation mark is encoded to its ITU-standard dot-and-dash sequence instantly.

International Morse Code: Technical Mechanics
International Morse code — standardized by the ITU in Recommendation ITU-R M.1677-1 — encodes 26 Latin letters, digits 0–9, and punctuation as sequences of two signal elements: a dot (dit) lasting 1 unit and a dash (dah) lasting 3 units.
What is Farnsworth Spacing?
Farnsworth spacing — developed by Donald “Russ” Farnsworth (W6TTB) and adopted as the ITU learning standard — plays each individual character at full speed (e.g. 20 WPM) but extends the gaps between letters and words. This trains the ear to hear characters as complete rhythm patterns rather than individual dot/dash counts, which is the correct learning approach. All licensed amateur radio training programs worldwide use this method.

A Short History of Morse Code
Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail developed the code in the 1830s-40s for the electric telegraph. Its most famous moment came in 1912, when the RMS Titanic sent CQD and SOS distress calls that were heard hundreds of miles away, helping rescue over 700 survivors. The International Morse standard used today (ITU-R M.1677-1) was refined from that original system and is still taught to pilots, sailors, and radio operators worldwide.
