How to Learn Morse Code

The rhythm method used by ham radio operators. Learn sounds, not symbols — from zero to 20 WPM.

The #1 Mistake Beginners Make

Most people try to memorize what dots and dashes look like. Wrong. At 20 WPM the signal is gone before your brain finds the chart. You’ll be stuck below 10 WPM forever. The fix: learn each character as a sound rhythm you recognize instantly.

The 5-Step Rhythm Method

1
Start at full speed
Learn at 20 WPM from day one. Slow Morse teaches counting — a habit that kills speed. Learn rhythms, not counts.
2
Learn by frequency
Start with E, T, I, A, N, M. Most common letters = shortest codes. You’ll read basic words within days.
3
Phonetic mnemonics
C = “Co-ca-Co-la” (—·—·). F = “Did-I-make-it” (··—·). Q = “God save the Queen” (——·—). Say the phrase, hear the letter.
4
Practice real words
Type common words into the translator and listen. “the” and “and” appear so often you’ll recognize them within a week.
5
15 min daily
Daily listening beats weekly marathons. 15 minutes × 30 days = most people hit 10 WPM.

The Koch Method

Scientifically proven, used by ARRL worldwide:

  1. Learn K and M first at 20 WPM until 90% accuracy.
  2. Add one new letter. Only one.
  3. Practice to 90% accuracy again.
  4. Repeat until all 26 letters done.

Most complete Koch in 6–8 weeks of daily 15-min sessions.

FAQs

15 min daily: 1 week = 5 WPM · 1 month = 10 WPM · 3–6 months = 20 WPM (ham radio standard). Consistency beats intensity.

Not with the rhythm method. Most people learn all 26 letters in 4–6 weeks of daily 15-minute audio practice. It’s hard only when taught visually.

The Koch method — one letter at a time at full speed until 90% accuracy. Start with K and M. Used by ARRL and ham radio training programs worldwide.
